The snake plant (also known as Mother-in-Law's Tongue) is very easy to take care of, brightens up a home, AND it can also make you healthier as it purifies indoor air.

Plants in general release carbon dioxide in the night due to the absence of photosynthesis. However, the Snake plant produces oxygen PLUS cleans the air by absorbing carbon monoxide and toxins like benzene, xylene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde. It is known to remove about 100 types of air pollutants per the Nasa study.

I bought a snake plant from a local gardening shop about 3 years ago but now I have 5 pots of snake plants which I keep them all indoors from the bedrooms to the living room. Snake plants are rapid growers so you can divide a plant and then re-pot it into a new container in new, fresh soil.

A snake plant, a succulent, is easy to take care of, so it is a great first plant for beginners. Succulents have a lot of moisture in their leaves, so they do not need a lot of water. Thus, snake plants require well-drained soil; it is best to use a succulent or cactus potting mix that you can buy easily from the gardening stores. Do not overwater the Snake Plants as the roots can rot. Allow the soil to dry in between waterings and ensure the pots have drainage holes so that any excess water can flow through. A snake plant prefers indirect sunlight (around 5 feet away from windows) even though it can tolerate full sun. It can also grow well in shady corners and other low-light areas in the home.

Dust can collect on the leaves, so wipe the leaves down with a damp cloth when you need to.

You do not really need to prune snake plants unless the leaves are rotten and there are cuts on the leaves. It is best to cut the stem close to the soil of the rotten leaves so it does not have to support dying matter anymore.

Snake plants can be toxic if pets snack on them. Keep them away from the reach of your pets especially if you have daring and curious ones.
